New York’s “millionaire strap-hanger’’ died to-day. , , , , Althougu John Emory Andrus had u fortune estimated, despite the depression, at several millions, he travelled to work by Tube -because the fare was only twopence. He polished his own shoes —every other day only—jus.t to save money on polish. Mr. Andrus, who was 93 years old, bought 10 shares in the Singer Sewing Machine Company in 1864 when he was a farmhand. He decided to hold them. Those shares to-day 'are worth more than half-a-million pounds. lie was also one of the largest holders of shares in the Standard Oil Company, which made his friend, John D. Hockfeller. one of the richest men in the world. Mr. Andrus—who in 1925 presented £20,000 for the maintenance of Wesley’s Chapel in the City road, Londonworked until two days before his death.
