SQUALLS ENCOUNTERED

BYRD SUPPLY SHIP NORTHWARD JOURNEY MONTREAL, Feb. 14. A message from the Jacob Ruppert states that she has been struck by numerous squalls since she left Little America. The vessel emerged from CTie tempestuous sixties to-day, her noon position being 59.54 degrees south and 17,5.45 degrees east, about 899 miles from Dunedin. The Bear of Oakland is about ICO miles astern.

According to radio communication early to-day the wind reached a velocity of 60 miles an hour, and once it was necessary to change the course to provide a lee for the two aeroplanes which are cocked on the after hatch.

RETURN FROM ANTARCTIC CALL AT DUNEDIN LIKELY Although no definite advice has been received from Rear-Admiral R. Byrd, it is practically certain that the Byrd Antarctic Expedition’s ships' will call at Dunedin on their.way back from the Antarctic. 'This is supported by the fact that a radio message received early this week by a member of the firm of 11. L. Tapley and Company from Mr. Harold June, chief of the aviation section of the expedition; stated that the Bear of Oakland and the Jacob Ruppert were -steaming north and that Mr. June expected to meet his Dunedin friends very shortly. Other private radio messages received in Dunedin indicate that the ships will call at Dunedin.’

The Jacob Support, carrying the bulk of the expedition personnel and equipment, cleared the Bay of Whales on February 8, and, as the voyage from the Antarctic usually 'occupies 12 days, the vessel should reach Dunedin next Wednesday. If the Jacob Ruppert is not towing the Bear of Oakland, the latter ship will probably not arrive until about the end of next week. ' A radio message has been forwarded by Mr. J. 11. Duncan, manager of 11. L. Taploy and Company, to Rear-Ad-miral Byrd, inquiring the destination or' the expedition’s ships, but no reply has yet -been received.
