“The Black Prince”

MfSS At. Coryn’s brilliant book, “'The Black . Prince ’’. is, fortunately for the reader, - a study of the Prince, and only incidentally a picture of the period in which he lived. Miss Goryn, of course, writes of Crecy, of Poictiers and the Sack of Limoges, but even these are described from the angle of personal exploits and' not merely from their military and national significance.

The Prince, who is one .of the romantic liero.es of history, has provided ALiss Goryn with plenty of scope for her gifts, and one of the most absorbing chapters is that in which she relates how* pleading the cause of a friend with the Fair Maid of Kent the interview ends with the Prince proposing marriage himself. The story, too, of the Siege of Calais is finely told; indeed, up to the day when the Prince died at -J(5 years of ago the interest in Miss Coryn’s recital dees not falter.
