(Herald Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Mat.awai •Sports Club was held in the Public Hall on Wednesday evening. The report and balance sheet, 'were adopted. ATr. It. S; Can I ton was elected patron, Mr. R. ATortleman, president, and Mr, S. Thompson, secretary. It was deckin' to hold the sports on March Hi, and to have the programme similar to that ot last year, with the addition of 100yds handicap; and a trier’s .jump substituted for the steeplechase jump; a potato race; .and a stock horse race. There was a good attendance of those interested. Mr. R. ;K. Caulton presented a cup for competition among the horseman. It was arranged to have a working bee on the ground on February 23. A. dance will be held after the sports. On Thursday afternoon Mrs. W. Thomas presided over a small attendance of members at the meeting-of the Women's Institute. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames ft. Fleming and 11. Bulst., and Miss B. A. Bulst. The meeting opened with the singing of ‘/Comrades and Friends." Greetings from Scottish and English links and a letter from Aliss -Stops were read by the link secretary. The roll call was interesting, the topic being, "What I should do if I were President." The six months’ competitions were won bv Mrs. C. G. Fielder. The competition for the day, "A bowl of foliage," was won by Mrs. Burgess. Members were reminded that nominations for the new committee were due, and some were received at the meeting. Airs. C. V. -Smith consented to nomination for the Poverty Buy executive. Mesdames F. Perl and 0, Pedersen, acted as hostesses, the afternoon tea interval being a very sociable interlude. The donation competition set in motion at the time of Paddy’s Market was won by Mr. A. Robb, the prize being a bag of sugar. The meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. Mr. W. McNair Miller, .Hastings, a retired officer of the ’Department of Agriculture, was a recent visitor to Matawai. Ho is on a hiking tour of the East Coast and central districts. Air. Aliller, who is a veteran of the Boer War, intended to visit Opotiki, Thames .and Taihnpe and thence travel across the Ruahinos to his home in Hastings. Comparing the districts passed through with the arid, uninteresting and monotonous miles travelled in parks of the South Island, Air. Aliller was enraptured with the hinterland of the North Island, and agreed with Kipling when describing -British Columbia as "perhaps the best country in the world except New Zealand." Air. -Aliller’s grandfather Avas the original Walter Alillcr, after whom Miller’s Flat, Otago Central, was named. His father, the later Air. W. .Aliller, was one time inspector of stock in charge of the Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay districts.

At the Moanui turn-off, two young men from Puh.a, Messrs Malone and Prendergast, had a narrow escape from going over the bank with their ear, •which left the road.

Owing to the Gisborne judge being out of town, Mr. G. McKay, Puha, is acting as judge of the flower section at the Alataw.ai Show.

Aliss Alatson, Wairoa, who has been the guest of Airs. F. Pert, has returned home. —'Airs -C. A. Davidson and family are visiting Gisborne.
