Mr. J. M. Carpenter, Gisborne, was a recent visitor to Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. John Thornton and their son, Tolaga Bay, are spending a few days with Mrs. Thornton, sen.', Olivft, Napier.

l.ieut.-Col. H. H. Hplderness, Hastings, who is spending a holiday at Morere, was a visitor to Cosboriie yes terday.
Mr, and Mrs. C R. Moore and family, Waipukurau, have left for Gisborne on a visit to relatives. After a short stay in Gisborne, they will motor to North Auckland to stay with relatives at the Bay of Islands. Dr. G, B. Palmer, of the Nethernc Mental Hospital, Coulsdon, Surrey, and Dr. A. G. Couston, of the County Mental Hospitall, Chester, will arrive in New Zealand shortly to take positions under the Mental Hospitals Department. Recent guests at the Masonic Hotel included Mr. and Mrs; Keath, Mr. and Mrs. Snaddon, Mr. and Mrs. Pole, Wellington; Miss Williams, Waipawa; Messrs. M. and H. Chambers, Havelock North; Mr. C. A. The promotion of Lieutenant-Com-mander R. .F. Nichols, of H.M.S. Dunedin, to commander is announced in the half-yearly list of promotions published by the Admiralty at the New Year. Commander Nichols has been on the New Zealand station since May 15, 1933, his appointment being as squadron navigating officer and staff officer (operations) to Rear-Adrnifial F. Burgos Watson, commodore commanding tho Now Zealand division of the Royal Navy. Before coming to New Zealand, Commander Nichols was in H.M.S. Danao on tho West Indies station.
