SHOOTING BRAWLS

TROUBLE IN THE SAAR

SPECIAL POLICE MEASURES

LONDON, Jan. 0.

The Times’ Saarbrucken correspondent says that despite, the first friendly celebrations, 1935 opened with shooting brawls.

Six native police joining in the. festivities were roughly handled, whereupon they arrested several anti-Nazis. The police were subsequently suspended for allowing party prejudice to interfere with duty. Elsewhere a mob, suspected to be Nazi Fronters, fired revolvers at the windows of a house, wounding a French engineer and his wife.

Special police measures are expected to prevent a recurrence of these brawls. Rival factions fought a revolver battle in the street at Ensdorf,; resulting in 23 casualties.

Three, were injured in a similar fracas in Aniborhalm street.

ADVANCE GUARD

SAARBRUCKEN SCENES LONDON, Dec. 18. The Saarbiucken correspondent of the Times states that Britain's advance guard ot troops comprised Army Service. men. Oil their arrival they descended from trucks containing vehicles imposingly inscribed in red letters: “Armee Britannique.” The first infantrymen to arrive declared later that tlie journey was different from the last trip they made across from Paris as “Blighties” from “Wipers.”

At Thionville the troops presented arms in response to a French salute. The Christmas trees in the streets of Saarbracken cheered them, and were some recompense for the fact that they had to miss having Christmas at home. Easy words like “Wein, bier” presented no difficulties to the military linguists, who reduced frauleins to .relighted laughter with the quicklylearned phrase, ‘‘lcli liebe dicli.”

In spite of official instructions members of the German Front are fraternising with the newcomers, and the experiment of despatching the contingent promises to work out admirably. Football matches have been arranged vv7cli the townspeople.
