SECRET POLICE SHOT
SOVIET LEADER’S ACTION AVOIDING ARREST LONDON, Jan. 2. The Daily Express’ Warsaw correspondent says that Smirnov, one of the oldest Communist leaders, was arrested after a meeting in Moscow for allegedly working with the Zinoviev opposition, and was taken to gaol. Two members of the Ogpu arrived at Kiev to arrest Implin, Chief Soviet Commissar. He was aware of their coming, and shot them dead and escaped. The freight train carrying Zinoviev and Kemeney 'to their exile in the Arctic passed through Archangel. The train was guarded.
