ALLEGED INTRIGUE
ABYSSINIAN DISPUTE ITALIAN AMBITIONS LONDON, Jan. 2. The Daily Telegraph’s special correspondent at Addis Ababa says the dark clouds of international intrigue form the background to the situation in Abyssinia. Ttaly is desperately anxious for colonial expansion, and covets the rich undeveloped slice of the Ethiopian empire between Eritrea and Italian Somaliland, but according to considered opinion a rude shock awaits the attackers.
The Abyssihians complain of Italian truculence in landing heavy artillery supplies in Somaliland and Eritrea, which are both to-day virtually barred against all save Italian officials and business men. It is stated that the size of the air force at Massau is surprising. Roads are being built in both Italian territories to the Abyssinian borders.
The Italians express the fear that the Abyssinians will raid Somaliland. This is unlikely, as Italy is the last Power they wish to provoke. In French Somaliland it is believed that Italy and France have a secrounderstanding under which Italy will obtain a protectorate over Ethopia, and change her attitude towards Austria, and give support for a French Danubinn bloc against Nazi expansions.
