LACK OF PATRONAGE

MOTU MOTOR SERVI*'

CANCELLED YESTERDA

Owing to lack of patronage by the settlers of the district, the motor service conducted over the Motu highway between Matawai and Opotiki by Mr. J. O. Musgrave’s Company was discontinued yesterday. The service was instituted eight months ago at the request of the settlers, and in granting a license for the route then the No, 4 District Transport Licensing Authority intimated that it was up to the settlers to see that the service was supported. When the Waioeka rqad became tlie main route north, the Motu and Toatoa settlers and those along the Motu road were left without a motor service, and at their request Mr. Musgrave instituted a new service under which a return trip was run between Matawai and* Opotiki each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and between Motu and Gisborne each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, thus giving the settlers ah opportunity to shop or do business in Gisborne or Opotiki and return home the same day. The arrangement was that the service should be given a six months’ trial, and at the end of that period the Transport Authority asked that it should be continued for another month. When that month had expired the settlers requested that the service should be continued for a further month to see them over the holiday period. Now, after eight months, lack of support from the settlers has necessitated the cancellation of the service until further notice.
