WIDESPREAD RAIN TO-DAY

HEAVY IN BACK COUNTRY

This morning’s rain, which at first bore the appearance of being only a thunderstorm, developed into something more beneficial. The rain seems to- have been fairly widespread, and in parts of thu back country heavy falls were experienced. Up to 9 o'clock this morning 12 points had fallen in Gisborne, and tins, together with the quantity which fell later,- should help-gardens .and pastures a, little. At Hangaroa, 64 points fell this morning up to 9 o’clock.

Some outdoor sports events were postponed, as a result of the rain, but its intermittent nature during the early morning caused some uncertainty with regard to the Ormond sports, which were eventually postponed when the rain continued.

Un the Coast tuis morning the weatner was threatening, but sports fixtures were not interfered with. At Wai'piro Bay there was a light shower nt. about 9 a.m., but the rain held off for the remainder of the morning, and tne tennis tournament was able to proceed. Similarly, at Ruatoi-ia there was a little rain in the early part of the morning, and misty conditions prevailed, with a threat of rain, but it was not necessary to postpone the rodeo.

Last month’s rainfall gauged on Mr. R. C. Parker’s gauge at Hangaroa totalled 2.78 in. on 13 days, the heaviest fall being 1.07 in. on December 27. The year's total was 47.58 in., made up as follows: January, 1.50 in.; February, 8.24 in.; March, 2.13 in.; April, 2.52 in.; May, 4.32 in.; June, 2.60 in. ; July, 6.7 Sin. ; August, 6.18 m.; September, 5.15 in.; October, 2.82 in .; November, 2.54 in.; December, 2.78 in. This is the ‘‘fourth year on which records have been taken by Mr. Parker, the annual totals being: 1931, 34.81 in.; 1932, 49,99 in.; 1933, 60.64 in.; 1934, 47.50 in.
