LONDON, Dec. 26.
Renewed fighting in Barlinnie gaol occurred on Christmas Day, resulting in four warders and six prisoners being treated in the prison hospital. Warders from surrounding gaols were rushed to Barlinnie to relieve the local men, who had on duty night and day since the original trouble, which was due to long sentence men seeing remanded prisoners being allowed to smoke and becoming incensed when refused their daily .cigarette. The ringleaders were locked in segregated cells. When • they were not allowed to exercise j on Christmas Day, they tore pieces of' wood from the beds and smashed the cell windows. Sympathisers among the exercising prisoners, when marched in the vicinity of a verandah surrounding the ringleaders’ cells, attacked the warders, and a general melee followed. An official inquiry is certain.
Forty prisoners working in a stone yard at Barlinnie gaol, Glasgow, on Saturday downed tools, dashed to a shed where 150 were working, and shouted: “Come on hoys. Now’s your chance.” Short period prisoners were unmoved, but about 20 long term prisoners joined the 40 and all dashed for the store, where the tobacco and cigarettes are kept. Hero they were confronted by a solitary warder, who parleyed, pretending that the affair was a joke. Eventually he opened the store and handed out a few cigarettes and a quantity of tobacco. Meanwhile, the warders had removed the other prisoners to their cells and then descended in force upon the raiders, overpowering them. Pandemonium in the cells lasted all night.
