SCIENTISTS FOR SOUTH
ARRIVAL FROM AMERICA
ICE-PLATEAU SURVEYS
On his way to join the Byrd Antarctic expedition as seismologist, Mr. G. 11. Bryant arrived in Auckland by the Niagara from the United States. Mr. Bryant is being sent by the ‘Seismograph Service Corporation, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the firm which has been supplying the geological instruments for tue expedition. He proceeded to Dunedin,, whore he will join Admiral Byrd's supply ship, the Bear of Oakland. Ho expects to remain with the expedition until its conclusion Mr. Bryant’s chief work in the Antarctic will bo the calculation of the depth of the ice ,on one of the plateaus that has recently been discovered by Admiral Byrd. A great deal of similar work with instruments that record vibrations reflected through
the earth is being done in the United Htates at present in order to locate o^tfields. Mr. Bryant’s firm recently supplied six dotectors to the New Zealand Government for use in its geophysical, surveys.
