LAWN TENNIS

DISTRICT TOURNEY

COMMENCEMENT OF. PLAY

Inclemfent weather yesterday caused a postponement of the opening of the poverty Bay a,nd East Coast Lawn Ten* nis Association's annual tournament, and the first games were not disposed of until about noon to-day. The late start caused numerous complications, but piSyers responded well to the situation, -and gave officials of the association a good deal of assistance, the prospect being that the first day’s ordinary schedule woftld be completed by this evening. A number of speculative entrances were withdrawn this morning, and those players who were not able to arrange for leave to see the tournament thi'bugh were ready enough to fall in jwith a suggestion that they might also shorten the fixture by drawing out. I With these withdrawals all accounted for., however, there were still strong fields in practically all divisions of the tournament, and a prospect of keen and exciting play hi the later stages. This morning the men’s divisions were playing on the Gisborne dub's courts at Haiti, and the women’s divisions at the Whataupoko courts, the playing surfaces at both dabs’ properties being little affected by the recent heavy rain. Early results were as under CHAMPIONSHIP SECTION MEN'S SINGLES First round.—Pere d. K. It. Kay, 9—6; W. Wilson d. J. ZaChSfiah, 9-4. j Hirst round.—C. Bbwen d. W. Brace, 9—3; S. Eldmonds d,. W. Prbmptittide oh the courts, and a quick trfefipdnse to official Calls, will help to make the tournament interesting for players and public, alike, and will also help to overcome the initial disadvantage of the late start.
