OPENING CARNIVAL

A' erowd’estimated-at. nearly 1000 attended the .opening carnival at. ,Tc Puia [bath's yesterday, when a long programme of swimnjing and other events was conducted with conspicuous success. i-Ohicf- aniong the events contested was Dm East Const Cup scratch race, which was won’ by S. Newton, a proficient swiaimer 'who also performed well in other events’on the day’s card. Assistance in conducting the carnival was tendered by the Gisborne Surf and Swimpiing Club officials, and a large number of the .competitors in the open events Were from the headquarters of that club, among them .being Miss B. Robinson, who was making her fust .appearance in competition during the season, having come out of retirement for a holiday swim at Tc Puia.

Prior to the opening of the gala, Air K. S. Williams, ALP., addressed the large gathering, .and after congratulating’ the township of To Puia on its possession of-such a -fine and commodious -swimming pool, with its inipioyeinehts which, could not be surpassed even in large towns throughout New jZetilttwl, .expressed the hope that the’ .bath would .attract 'moire attention th a spa tyhich deserved to rank with the most beneficial in Neiv Zealand, in regard to the curative quality of the waters.
