TRAGEDY IN SAMOA
TWO CHILDREN KILLED
BURSTING OF GUN MUZZLE
A distressing accident happened on November 22 at Leone, Tutuila, American Samoa, when the Rev. Father (Joupellnud celebrated the completion of his twenty-fifth year’s work as a Roman Catholic missionary in Eastern and Western Samoa. The native catechists had obtained permission, and ammunition, from the Governor to use an old ship’s cannon in saluting Bishop Darnand. On being discharged portion of the muzzle was blown off and fragments scattered in all directions.
Three native children were sitting near a house fully 60yds. away, when pieces of the gun struck them. One was killed or-Iright, a second di'et\ next day in the hospital, and the third ,wasj seriously injured. The' cause "of the; bursting of (be gun is unknown. It was stated that only a weak charge was used.
