INTERNATIONAL TENNIS
AUSTRALIANS' SUCCESS
EVERY MATCH WON
CRAWFORD DEFEATS PERRY
(Elec. Tel. Copyright —United Press Assn.) SYDNEY, Dec. 23.
Having won every match fn the first three days of the international triangular tennis contest, Australia is in an unassailable position. A capacity crowd was present for Saturday’s games, which were played in very hot weather. Men's Singles.—Hughes defeated Brugnon, 6—4, 6—3; McGrath defeated Boussus, 7 —5, 3 —6, 6—3; Crawford defeated Perry, 6 —o, 6—4. Men’s Doubles.—Crawford and McGrath defeated Perry and Hughes, 6—l, 6—2, 7—5.
The Hughes v. Brugnon match was a patchy affair, as Brugnon tired badly. Delightful tennis featured the Me-Grath-Boussus match, each concentrating on the other’s weaknesses, but McGrath’s forehand stood up bettor than Boussus’ backhand.
Perry gave a pathetic display in the first set against Crawford, netting and outing simple returns. Crawford, on the other hand, was in great touch off either hand. He served , deep to the corners, forcing Perry to make defensive returns, from which Crawford scored with placements. Perry steadied in the second set, and followed good length drives to the net, where he volleyed his way to a 3—o and 4 —2 lead, but then errors by Perry and hard serving by Crawford enabled the latter to tako four games in a row for the match.
The Australian pair completely outplayed the Englishmen in the doubles, Hughes being the weak link.
