WITHOUT UMBRELLAS

GERMAN PEOPLE

MANUFACTURERS’ APPEAL

FRANKFURT, Ofct. 14. Tbe number of “German Fronts,’ political and otherwise, has been increased by the formation of a “German Umbrella Front,” which was decided upon at a meeting of the associations of German umbrella _ manufacturers and the ancillary industries at Cologne. This decision has been prompted by tbe heavy decline in the German umbrella industry and trade, by reason of which some 150,000 persons are said to have been thrown out of work. The general discarding of umbrellas (as well as of sunshades) is attributed to the rapid development of sports and physical culture in Germany, to which may also be added that of military and semimilitary culture. The German umbrella makers, m order to emerge from their “catastrophic position,” contemplate appealing to tlie German public, which is to be invited to take part in prize competitions witn the best suggestions for restoring the popularity of the umbrella. .They are silently cherishing hopes for an automatic ‘ return of the umbrella within the regular cycle of fashions.
