Many Gisborne people noted with regret the absence from yesterday’s Mmction in honor of the Duke of Glou"Ster of the Mayoress, Mrs. J. Jackson, who for some days has been recovering from an illness. The Mayor’s participation in tho preparations for welcoming the Duke was given under the added strain of uncertainty regarding the health of Mrs. Jrfckson, and he was. accorded the sympathy of all ,who were aware of the circumstances. Today’s report on Mrs. Jackson’s health was more cheering, however, and .it is hoped that in a week or two the Mayoess will be able again to undertake the social duties of her office. Two presentations were made this afternoon to Mr. G. H. Dunn, a member of the Cook County Council’s staff, on the occasion of his approaching marriage. The function took place when members of the staff, assembled at aftcr- . noon tea. The county clerk, Mr. F. T. Eobirtson, apologised for the absence of the County chairman, Cr. Charles Matthews, and on behalf of the council handed Mr. Dunn an entre dish, while from the staff Mr. Dunn was given a casserole. In making the presentations, Mr. Eobinson referred to the very pleasant associations w »formed between Mr. Dunn and liis colleagues, who wished him and the future Mrs. Dunn every happiness. The first event on the programme of the Gisborne Surf and Swimming Club’s carnival on Wednesday evening was the 60yds. boys’ championship, for club members. Through an oversight, the occupants of the respective lane were not identified prior to the start of the race, and at the conclusion, there was some confusion owing to the judges being unable to indicate by name the placed swimmers. The announcement finally made gave rise to further difficulty, and the club committee will probably take up the question again at its next meeting. The boy who was announced as the winner, A. Sunder and, factually was; not placed m the clnimWonship event, the actual winner of the event being another swimum*. The course to be taken by tho committee has not been determined, but probably it wpl order the race to be swum again.
