The third set was a battle of tactics. McGrath slowed up his game, worrying Perry with a high hounding ball on the Englishman’s backhand. McGrath led 3—l, and then Perry won four iu a row for a s—t 3 lead,' but McGrath, playing very accurately, evened to 5 —5. Perry led at 6—5 and 7—6, and McGrath at B—7, when he had match point. Perry was ahead at 9—B, but McGrath then played brilliantly to win three games for the match.
The Crawford-Brugnon contest iwas a one-sided affair, the Frenchman being ‘badly out of touch. The same thing applied to the Hughes-Boussus match. Crawford and McGrath volleyed superbly in (he doubles, but the Frenchmen were again below par.
