REGENT THEATRE
LAST NIGHT OF “EARL CARROLL’S VANITIES”
Quito the loveliest thing seen on the screen at the Regent is the scene of the “Murder in the Vanities” in which beautiful girls manipulate fans to represent the waves of the sea. There have been many musical extravaganzas of recent years and there have also been many mystery lilms, but until the production of “Murder at the Vanities those two apparently incompatible elements of entertainment had never been successfully blended into the one story. Now, however, tiro task has been done and ns a result “Murder at the Vanities” is delightful entertainment. The stars are Carl Brisson and Mary Carlisle. A delightful song and dance item by two tiny juveniles and a ballet is presented on the stage. —Robert Montgomery in ‘‘Hide Out” To-morrow — Robert Montgomery, star of numerous Metro-bold wyrt-Mayer successes, gives auother noteworthy performance at the Regent to-morrow in his latest offering, “Hide-Out,” which is one of the cleanest and most entertaining films seen in Gisborne for many a month. Montgomery has a part that suits him down lo the ground and one of the type in which the public likes to see him. He is seen as a jovial “playboy racketeer,” who, finding it necessary to leave .town, seeks refuge in the country, both to escape arrest and to recover from a skirmish with an alien bullet. He is eared lor by. a farmer and his family, and, while staying with them, falls in love with thi‘ farmer’s daughter. What, happen', after that, leads up io a. somewhat, unusual climax. Playing opposite the slat is the beautiful and vivacious Maureen O’Sullivan. The excellent supporting east is headed by Edward Arnold, Elizabeth Patterson, Whilford Kane. amS Mickey Rooney. The farm scenes in Mo. picture are delightful. In addition thers will be a good supporting bill, including a Laurel and Hardy comedy, a monologue by Chic Sale, a Charlie Chase comedy, and a Pete Smith oddity. r l »' plans are rapidly filling.
