SWIMMING

INITIAL CARNIVAL GISBORNE CLtJB VENTURE FOUR 'TITLES CONTESTED Counter-attractions affected the attendance at the Gisborne Surf and Swimming Club’s first public carnival Of the 1934-35 season, held last evening, but the swimmers gave the fixture excellent support, and competition in all divisions of the programme was keen. There were four club titles at stake in the course of the evening, and in respect of all of these the competition was close and exciting. Most meritorious of the performances was that of Miss C. McKnight, who won the 50yds. ladies’ championship race by a narrow margin, and in doing so lowered by three-fifths of a second the previous club record, registered by Miss X. Stevens in 1929. The Second ,place in this event wont to Miss Meg Armstrong, a young and promising swimmer who should bo a serious rival to the champion, at this distance, in any future contest. Miss Armstrong’? time, as well as ‘the winner’s, Idas an improvement on the previous best registered by a lady swimmer of the club.

The 50vds. schoolboys’ championship was taken by A. Sunderland, wlio put up a good performance to beat ft. Clay by half a yard. In the men’s championship race, of the same distance, It. Cole-bourne proved that he is still equal to the task of meeting all competition in club circles, and won by a touch in the final heat from D. Bowie, whose performance was a good one, too. Bowie was last year’s holder o'f the intermediate class, at 50yds., and his title -.passed on last evening to G. 'Selves, though his record was not approached. The intermediate race, for which Bowie is no longer qualified, brought out a good lass of lads, who finished the first length of the bath on practically even terms,-and only began to string out a bit after the turn.

Several good handicap events were also contested during the evening, all furnishing good -contests The carnival was conducted with the usual dispatch, and the smooth running of the arrangements reflected credit on the club officials.
