OBITUARY

COLONEL JOHN WARD (Elec. T«l.’Copyright —United Press Assn.) (Received Dee. 20, noon) LONDON, Dee. 19. The- death occurred tq-day of Lieut,Colonel John Ward, a former member of the House of Commons.

The late Colonel Ward, who was 68 years of age, served in the Sudan and the Great War, for -which he raised five labor battalions. He was a prominent member of the Labor Party, having joined the Social Democratic Federation in'lßßs. "He sat in the House of Commons as an Independent from 1906 to 1929.

i The death occurred in Wanganui on i Sunday of Mr. John George Swan, who ’ rendered very full service to the city aim"district. Re was an elocutionist of note, and his ability in this direction i was always available in the cause of chairity. He was a son of the late Mr. G. H. Swan, who was Mayor of Napier for several years. Mr. Swan entered business in Wanganui; and was connected with Swan’s | brejwery before becoming licensee of Ohevannes Hotel, ope of the oldest ; houses in the Dominion. His talent as ' a tyeatrical organiser was availed of when the, Swankers Club was formed in the days of the war, and he took a prominent part in the establishment of the j Competitions Society in 1920. The Wanganui Trotting Club, Cycling Club and Caledonian Society all owed him a dety of gratitude, and in his younger ' days he Wa.Ua captain in the Irish Rifle Volunteers.
