SERIOUS GRASS FIRES

SHEEP STATIONS SWEPT

(Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, this day. Owing to the extremely hot, dry weather of Hie last few weeks, grass fires are becoming serious much earlier than usual.

A large area of sheep grazing land at Hinds was swept yesterday afternoon, four owners being affected. Between 300 and 400 men were occupied for four hours in fighting the flames, one house being saved with difficulty. A few days ago a settler in the district lost six stacks of Inst season’s oat sheaves.
