THE ENGINEER’S REPORT

Weather conditions are assisting the Cook County Council with its reading work, in wiiicli there is considerable activity this summer.

The monthly report of the county engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, to . the council yesterday mentioned this, and stated: “Steady progress is being made with the season’s programme and the excellent weather conditions have been of considerable assistance in the carrying, out ol works generally. The bridge gang has been engaged on repairs to bridges and culverts and on reconstruction work at the quarries. A,considerable improve, meat lias been effected in the appearance of t lie county yard at Alatawhero. RIDINGS AND GENERAL

“Gisborne riding.—ln company with the chairman and Cr. Benson, an inspection was made of portion of this riding. The proposed survey work at Ormond cemetery was investigated . and arrangements made to have the work carried out. The Waihirqre Domain was visited and the splendid way m which this area lias been attended to is very noticeable. The county plantations in the Gisborne ridings are in a very satisfactory state. “Murivvai riding.—ln company with Cr. Bowen, ail inspection was made of portion of this riding and it'was arranged to put in hand repair work on the Wharerata-Opoutama road at an early date. Reconstruction work on portion ot the Taurau Valley road is well in hand and It, is proposed to carry out minor gravel repairs on Roberts road at an early date. “Pakarae riding.—A proposal to alter a had corner on the Panikau road was investigated, but sufficient funds were not available to carry out the work. It is_ proposed to apply for a Government sidy for the work next year. “Patutahi riding.—ln company with the chairman, an inspection was made of the greater portion of this riding during the month. The roads generally were found to be in fair order. A small amount of patching work is being; carried out on Totangi road with material from Patutahi quarry. “Pouawa riding.—The usual general maintenance work has been carried out.

“Tarulieru riding.—Cleaning work on the Tarulieru Creek is to be put in hand by the Public Works Department as soon as the necessary men are available. The gravel roads are to receive a coat ol maintenance gravel at an early date. “Te Arolia riding.—The usual general maintenance work has been carried out. Time has not permitted the further investigation of Stafford’s road deviation. “Tmiroto riding.—The usual general maintenance work has been carried out. A light coat of Wairoa shingle lias been put on the lower end of Parikanapa road. The grader has been giving attention to back roads.

“Waingake riding.—Maintenance metal is being crushed near Waingake to carry out repairs on the main valley road. At. present lack of funds makes it extremely difiienlt to carry out satisfactory repairs on the Alamituke to Reay Bridge section and it is hoped that highway maintenance subsidy will be available for the purpose.

“VVaimata and Whataupoko ridings. The usual general maintenance work has been carried out.

“Relief works.—A considerable decrease lias taken place in the number of men on relief works under the control of the county, a, drop from 400 to 200 taking place during the past three months. This is probably accounted for somewhat by men transferred to sustenance or to Public Works Department gangs.

MAIN HIGHWAYS MAINTENANCE ‘ “Gisborne-Wairoa, via Alorere. —Repairs and painting ' have been carried out to railings on all bridges. “Gisborne-Wairoa, via Ilangaroa.— Light metal repairs have been carried out with metal from Gentle Annie quarry and from depots on the road. Approximately 125 cub. yds. of metal have been spread. Side drains have been cleaned and the tractor grader has been engaged re-surfacing. “Gisborne-Opotiki, via Coast.—The, shoulders of tlio bitumen pavement have been ‘built up with suitable material. “Gisborne-Opotiki, via Motu. —Widening of the road is being carried out on Kaitaratahi Hill. Extensive regrading is being carried out on the gravel section with the power grader and planer. Inlet and outlet drains have been cleaned and deepened at the culvert in the Ormond Dip.
