RUATORIA W.I. PARTY (Herald Correspondent.) j On Monday th-e Ruatoria "Women's Institute held its annual children's’ party. Owing to influenza the attendance was not as good as in previous years. The children spent the evening dancing and playing games, followed by a delicious home-made supper, after Which each child was given an icecream. Prom 10 p.m. till midnight the adults danced. The hall looked 'very gay with largo clusters of balloons. The dance music was provided by Miss Kura Beale, Mr. S. Pyne, and various drummers. Burrell, Ruatoria, is to spend Christmas and New Year with her mother, Mrs. Burrell, Hastings.—Mr. S. S. Pyne, Makarika, loft this week to spend the Christmas holidays in Whakatane.—Miss P. Clows, Ruatoria, is ing the Christinas holidays in Auckland. RUATORIA SCHOOL PICNIC The much-looked-forward-to Ruatoria School picnic was held at the native bush reserve, “Takamore,” by permission of Mr. R. H. Wicksteed. In. the beautiful surroundings and favored by glorious weather, all had a happy day. There were over 200 present, having been transported to the grounds by lorries and cars..

Mrs. A. D. Littlejohn and an energetic ladies’ committee -were responsible for the dispensing of meals, and they deserved great credit for the manner in which they provided for all. Food prepared in the Maori “hangi” was much appreciated and thanks were expressed to the Maori members. The head teacher, Mr . Strong, capably conducted the programme of 52 events, lie was assisted by Mr. J. Ryan as starter, Mr. Owen Johnston as judge, add an energetic men’s committee who left nothing undone in providing sport for the children. Much interestwas created in the senior and junior championship events for girls and boys. The girls’ senior event being won by'Muriel McGosh, and the junior event by Henrietta Walker. The first priae for the boys’ senior event was a handsome encyclopedia donated by Mr. A. Hunter. This was won by Johnnie Morrell, who ran a great race. The junior -event was well contested and was won by lan Mullooly, who received a handsome book donated by an anonymous donor. 'Towards the conclusion of the events, every child received a book and 50 small children each received a toy. A bag of sweets and an apple was then given to each child and this ended a very happy hay. ] The concluding event, “Catching the pig,” caused -.great amusement, the pig, being captured by Mr. J. Ryan after a long chase. Events resulted as follows
