COOK COUNTY COUNCIL
The Cnok County Council met to-day. ! Present: Crs. Chas. Matthews, chairman, S. T. Gray, J. Tombleson, F. A . I Shanks, M. T. B. Hall, 11. G. Smith, J. E. Benson, M. L. Holden, W. G. .Sher- • ratt, and J. G. N. Thomas, j Mr. K. S. Williams, M.P., in reply to the council’s resolution, wrote that if an attempt was made to alter the present system of county voting he would oppose jit. Mr. 1). W. Coleman, M.P., wrote 1 that if the matter came up—and lie i doubted if it would—he would give the matter consideration. Tie could not promise to oppose t ho change, for Jus own personal opinion was that the system used in tile cities and the borough was preferable and more correct. Mr. F. G. Murphy, on behalf of the Makaraka School Jubilee Committee, wrote extending to the council an invita- | tion to be present at the celebrations on j January 2D. —It was decided to accept [tilts invitation. j Mr. Wallis, Patutahi, wrote asking permission to put a water pipe under the load.—The matter was referred to the engineer. j The Public Works Department wrote i asking for the use of the council’s road roller on the Hangaroa-Waikaro-janoana road relief work, pointing out that the work done was for the benefit jof the county.—The county engineer, 'Mr K. F. Jones, said that it should bo the practice of the council to charge for the use of plant to each of the ivories done, and if it followed out that policy some charge should he made to the Public Works Department in this respect. —The mailer was referred to the chairman and engineer. Tin l county engineer, Mr K. F. Jones, was authorised to attend a conference of engineers at Auckland in March. The Unemployment Board advised that it could not accept the insurance responsibility for unemployed engaged on tree cutting near telephone and telegraph lines, and that this responsibility would devolve either on the P. and T. Department or the property owners, through the Cook County Council. The clerk of awards, Auckland, advised that an application had been made to add the Cook County Council as a party to the Poverty Bay builders, contractors and general laborers’ award, 1933. —It was agreed that the chairmhn, county clerk, county engineer and Mr M. J. White should go into the matter. The sanitary inspector was granted
leave of absence to attend the annual conference of sanitary inspectors, the council to make a contribution to his expenses, as last year. Mr. W. G. McKay, Parikanapa, was granted permission to out cocksfoot on Gentle Annie reserve on a royalty of Id per lb. Mr. E. A. Cameron was appointed dog registrar on the same conditions as fr. merly. The taxes were fixed at the same as Inst year, 2s 6d for sheep dogs and 10s. for other dogs.
