(Horald Corrospomlent.) ‘ On Saturday evening a euchre party was staged in the Stadium in aid of the children's picnic. There was a good attendance, and the winners were Mrs. If. Bert and Mr. T. Scholium. Matawai parents and children alike have been looking! forward to the culminating event of the school year, when the prize-giving and sports to-day will make a pleasant finish to the year’s work. The Homebrook School also holds an annual picnic to-day. Last Friday afternoon this go-ahead little sole charge school laid a parents’ afternoon, the children entertaining tlieir parents with the following programme, which also included folk dances: —Grand march, all pi.pJs; recitation, ,J. Willan, H. Rowley, D Willan. il. Englebretseu, It. Bellerby, and E>. Briant; quick drill exercises, senior children; recitation, Mary Willan and Noel white; girls’ hopping! steps, M White, A. Baird, M. Baird, R. Briant, M. Willan, and E. Englebretseu; recitation, M. Baird and R. Sefton, and E. Englebretseu and J. Willan; bending exercises, seniors; songs, “Deep in the forest" and “The Spanish CavalTer,” all pupils; recitations', R. Briant, A. Baird, and M. While; song and dance, “The Sun,” all pupils. At the conclusion of the items Mr. F. Briant called for three cheers for Miss H. Lovcll-Smith, which met with a hearty response from all. Among those present were Mesdames F. G. Bellerby, F. C. Briant, J. K. Briant, R ]fi Baird, P. Jacobs, J. Englebretsen, C. White; IL and S. Willan, C. Watton, L. Seftoiq 11. Rowley; Miss A. Jacobs, an ex-pupil; Messrs. I). and J- Briant and V. G. Bellerby. The dance to be held this evening after the picnic in aid of the dental clinic will take place in Mr. M. Doyle’s new woolshed. The floor was made from good timber in order that it might occassionally be used for dancing. The Matawai School Committee held a special meeting on Monday to complete arrangements for the school break-up and to have everything in order for the Duke’s visit.

The choir held a successful practice in St. Mary’s Church on Friday evening, several new choristers joining, preparing carols for Christmas Eve singing. At Koranga, the school break-up took the form of a Christmas tree, and an open-air entertainment in which the pupils performed to the delight of the large audience of parents and friends. The programme included recitations by Jill and Lillian Clayton-Greene, Ann Williams and Crichton Wallis, and “oik dances by the senior children, at (tie conclusion of which a senior scholar, Jose Russell, took the oportunity of thanking Mr, O. C. Watt for the trouble be Had taken in training the children and called for three cheers, in which all present joined. When it came to the children’s turn to he entertained the room was darkened and candles lit. and each child was-made the recipient of a charming gift. A delightful afternoon tea was provided by the ladies, and the first break-up ceremony of the new Koranga School was conceded by all present to be a very successful function.
