GISBORNE CLUB RACE FROM WHANG ARE! The linal race of the Gisborne Flying Club’s old bird season was bold last Saturday, the event being for the club’s Old Bird Championship Cup. The birds were consigned for liberation to Opua, an air lino distance of 318 miles, but owing to the train being unable to reach there through wash-outs on the line, the birds had to be released at Whangarei, an air line distance of 288 miles. The birds were liberated at 7.8 a.m. in lino weather, according to telegraphed advice from the. stationmastor at Whangarei, and tall were home shortly before 3 p.m. The race resulted in a very close finish as follows: F. Green’s b.e.c. Reliance, 1065.4yds per min., 1 ; W. Brown’s p.p.c. Hurry On, 1063.08yds per min., 2; R. Somervell’s b.c.p.c. Mystery, 1062.3yds per inin., 3; F. B. Wildish’s r.e.c. Copper King, 1061.9yds per min., 4. Keen competition between the members lias been a feature of the season’s racing, the position for most points being close. For the 18 races competed for F. Green has gained the most points, 35, while A. Bound, 27 points, fills second place. For third place no less than three membors share the honor, W. Brown, F. B. Wildish and A. McLean, with 26 points apiece. As the club has an aggregate trophy for the member scoring the most points for both the old and young bird seasons combined very keen competition must be expected in the forthcoming young bird season. The young birds commence racing about the middle of January.
