In the House of Lords, in the course of the resumed debate on the Indian constitutional reform, Lord Lloyd led t lie attack against the Government s scheme on the same lines as Mr. Winston Churchill and his. followers in the House of Commons. Lord Reading, an ex-Viceroy, on the contrary, thought that the Select Committee’s report was an improvement on the White Taper, though he preferred direct to indirect elections'. Lord Ponsonby protested that the Government bad been over anxious to meet the objections of its diehards. Lord Hnilsham said nobody was entitled fr> vote against the Government unless they could offer a solution better than the Select Committee’s. Cord Salisbury’s amendment was defeated by 239 votes' to 62, and the Government’s motion was adopted.
