BOROUGH AFFAIRS

COUNCIL BUSINESS LAST 1034 MEETING The last meeting of the Borough Council for 1934 wa.s held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. John, Jackson, presided, and there were present also Crs. G. Bradley Smith. H. Holmes, I). S. Thomson, W. J. Mac Gibbon, W. Cave, and J. H. Hall. The Cook County Council wrote agreeing to bear the cost of lowering a. section of the water supply main on the Mangapoike road, and asked that the work should bo put in hand at an early date.—The engineer stated that owing to the shortage of water it would be impossible to undertake the work until there was sufficient rainfall. —It was agreed that the work should not lie undertaken until the time was opportune from that point of view. The city engineer, Wellington, forwarded advice regarding the use of bitural for roading purposes, and suggested that the engineer should visit Wellington to see the work being carried out. —It was resolved, on the motion of the Mayor, that the engineer should visit Wellington on a suitable occasion to study roadworks. Mr. T. W. Lewis applied for permission to extend with similar materials a wood arid iron building in Grey street—As the building concerned was not in the brick area, the request was granted. A petition was received from various business people in Derby street requesting that that street from Gladstone road to Palmerston road, or a portion thereof, should be tar sealed. —The matter was referred to the estimates committee for consideration during the framing of next year’s estimates. Mr. A. Sawyer -wrote requesting that improvements should be effected to the footpath in Roebuck road, between Gladstone and Childers roads. —lt was agreed that the work should be undertaken if there was sufficient bitumen over at the conclusion of this season’s programme of bitumen footpath work. The Hawera Borough Council wrote seeking support for a remit to the Municipal Conference urging that all boroughs, irrespective of population, should participate in the allocation of petrol tax. —The matter was left, to the council’s representatives at. the conference.

REPORTS ENGINEER’S DEPARTMENT The engineer, Mr. E'.' R. Thomas, reported inter alia:— “Road repairs.—Bitumen surfaces in various localities have been repaired, and maintenance gravel lias been spread on Collins, Albert, Wellington, and Atkinson streets, and on Herbert, Northcote, Lytton, and Valley roads. “Hot-mix paving.—During the fortnight ho't-mix paving in Gladstone road, between Disraeli aiid Cobden streets and between Derby street and the clock tower, was completed. “Read’s quay improvement work.— The stone wall and fence have been completed with the exception of the netting, which will be erected as soon as possible. The grading of the river bank will be continued. “Macrae bath. —A stand and wringer have been erected and are now in use. The'bath has been emptied and refilled with fresh water on the scheduled days. Now that the hot weather has commenced the patronage of the bath is increasing. “Robinson Memorial Clock tower. — The construction of two concrete pillars to support the floodlights has been 1 completed, and the Power Board has installed two EOO-watt lamps and finished off the erection of two traffic lights. Plastering of the concrete pillars is in hand. “Unemployment relief work.—Work has been provided for 92 men per week. The main works comprised: Vegetable gardens at Anzac Park and Aberdeen road reserve, cleaning and trimming drains and footpaths, various jobs at the council’s yard, and work at Read’s quay. “Taumata Hill reservoir.—Ladders for each tank have been constructed and placed in position. The erection ct a fence around the reservoir is being put in hand. Taumata Hill teservoir supply was turned on to supply the requirements of the borough while repairs to the main line were being carried out. The reservoir was refilled as opportunity offered.” “In connection with the waterworks, the engineer reported that during, the fortnight ended December 10 there had been six leaks in the main line, one at Waingake Bridge, one near Te Pura, one at Parker’s, and three in the vicinity of Pine Bush. The quantity of water that passed through the meter at the headworks for the weeks, ended December 3 and 10 was 7,820,000 and 7,300.000 gallons respectively.

WORKS COMMITTEE The works committee reported inter alia: — “A list of contemplated works for the fortnight was submitted by the engineer, the principal works being the continuation of hot-mix paving its authorised, improvement work at Read’s quay, the construction of concrete pillars at the Robinson Memorial Clock tower, and tiie construction of ladders for each tank at the Taumata Hill reservoir. “Proposed major works for the quarter ending .March 31, 1935, are as follow: Roebuck road bridge repairs. Hot-mix programme: Roads, Stout street, Fitzlierbert street, Hinaki street, and Graham and Iramu roads; footpaths, Aberdeen road, upper Gladstone road, Mill road, Hinaki street, and Graham and Iranui roads. Supplies of gravel are to be obtained from the riverbed at Waerenga-a-hika. “An application for the issue of a taxi-cab license received, consideration, and it; was decided that the license lie granted. The by-law restricts the number of passenger vehicle licenses to 17, and this additional license will bring the total to the number provided for in the by-law. “A request for permission to erect a Christmas and New Year calico sign across Gladstone road was declined, it being considered by the committee thatthe erection of such signs across lire streets is not desirable.” WATERWORKS COMMITTEE The waterworks committee reported:— “A request, for the purchase of a portion of the Awapuni waterworks reserve received the consideration of the committee, when it. was decided to recommend that the council should adhere to its previous decision in this matter, namely, ‘it is not desirable to sell any portion of this waterworks reserve,’ and that the request bo declined. Should the council decide at some future date to sell this area, the : present applicant should receive first 1 consideration. ’ ’ The reports wore adopted.
