POVERTY BAY CLUB SMITH FOURS CONTESTS The first round of tha Poverty Bay Rowing Club’s four-oar series for Mr. George Smith’s trophies was completed last evening, when four races were rowed. The round comprised six races, two of .which were decided on Monday evening, and results of the respective events were:— I. Stevens beat J. McCarthy; H. Twiglev beat, .T. Young; J. Bacon beat R. Smythe; G. Ardern beat W. McLeod ; T. AUiriro boat It. Neil son; and J. Barrett beat R. Webb. The second round is to be rowed oil this evening, the draw having been made as under: G. Ardern meets H. Twigley ; I. Stevens meets J. Barrett ; T. Munro meets J. Bacon.
GISBORNE CLUB EVENTS DOUBLES AND FOURS Racing in the Gisborne Rowing Club s Gordon double-sculling and Executive Fours series, was continued last night, over the three-quarters of a mile and mile courses respectively. In the first doubles race R. DeLosta and M. Bright, Gscc., beat K. Bell and T. Lewis, lOsec. With a good start DeCosta drew lovol at t,ho footbridge, and held a slight advantage over Bell for the, remainder of the course to win by a length. R. Nicoll and R. Coleman, 6sec„ heal D. Robertson and S. McLernon, Bsec Robertson held Nicoll off for the first half of the distance, hut with a steady swing Nicoll took the lead and held it to win ny a length. K. Cram- and M. Dobson, 6sec., beat 1 . Foster and C. Hanson, scr, Crarer made good use of his 6sec. advantage and held his lead to win by a length, with Foster coming up at the finish. In the four-oar series R. Sealy, str., L. Scholium, A. Cleaver, and G. Hall beatG. J. Jeune, sir., L. Martin, R. Coderwall, and E. Walton. Jeune experienced trouble at the start, and Sealy, with this iAitial advantage led throughout to win oy a length.
