A LONGER JOURNEY

NAPIER TO GISBORNE THE DUKE’S ITINERARY PUBLIC FIXTURE UNCHANGED Owing to the number of stops which the Duke of Gloucester has agreed to make between Napier and Gisborne on Thursday, His Royal Highness’ arrival at Gisborne will not eventuate uidil 4 p.m., it was intimated last evening by the Department of Internal Affairs, in a telephonic communication to the town clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins. The public reception ceremony, which is to take place at the Childers road reserve, will commence at 4.20 p.m., and the general preparations for this function will not be affected by the revisiou of the Duke’s travelling schedule. The desire of the Duke of Gloucester to meet ;ts many of the people of New Zealand as possible is indicated by his agreeing to tho inclusion of several unscheduled stops between Napier and Gisborne. The Royal visitor is showing equal consideration of Gisborne and East Coast people by his evident wish not to delay proceedings here, when the interests of a large number of children will be involved. The Duke was- willing, it is understood, to proceed direct to ttie reserve, in order to ensure that the assembly should not he kept waiting, but this proposal was not urged by the municipal authorities, who had in mind both tbe Duke’s convenience and the desire of a large proportion of the Gisborne public that he should enter the town as previously arranged, under a gay display of bunting and amidst a fitting display of public interest in his visit. Advice of the Duke’s progress between Napier and Gisborne will be officially communicated to the Mayor, Mr. John Jackson, and every effort will be made to maintain the travelling schedule. It should be -possible for adult members of the public to witness the Duke’s entry into the town, and to proceed later to the reserve in ample time to participate in the district welcome.
