CATHOLIC BAZAAR (Jierald Correspondent.) All roads led to To Puka Hall on Friday when a Christinas fair was held iu aid of the Tokoraaru Bay St. James Catholic Church. The function opened in tiie afternoon, add business at the various stalls was brisk. The stalls were gaily decorated with streamers and greenery, and the shades of gold and orange predominated, to lone with the drapmgs of the hall. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the ladies, and the ice-cream and soft-drink stall proved very popular on a hot afternoon. From the time the doors were opened at night, the Te Puka Hall was packed, and the sideshow’s and extra novelties were an added attraction. There were corners allotted to dart-throwing, a fish-pond, skittles, candle-lighting and the shooting gallery, and the excitement caused by these amusements was intense. The evening’s enjoyment was interspersed with items by Gisborne and local talent, which did much to add to the success of the fair. Mrs. Menzies, Gisborne, brought two Tittle dancers who contributed Highland dancing, sword dancing, and the sailor’s hornpipe, and their items were greatly appreciated. A troupe of boys and girls from the Tokomnru Bay Native School gave some fine exhibitions of poi dances and hakas, and their songs were sweetly harmonised. An item which was very effective and striking was contributed by six local young ladies, whose singing and dancing was enjoyed. The song, “The Little Dutch Mill,” was sung in costume by Mrs. J. B. Stafford and Miss Ivy Conole, who were assisted in a dancing chorus by Misses L. Ferris, D. Pepper, N. Hill, and E. Oates. During another interval Mrs. Stafford sang in costume “If I Knock the L Out of Kelly,” and was warmly applauded. The articles allotted for competition •were distributed at the close of the evening to the winners, who were as follows: —Ladies’ trousseau set: Miss E. Ilautapu. Baby’s knitted set: Mrs. H. Thomas, Hicks Bay. Men’s pyjamas: Mrs. Reuben Newton. Man’s shirt: Miss Ivy Conole. Doll: Miss Phyllis Fairlie. Sweets: Mr. W. Rauch. Handpainted cushion: Miss E. Jackson. Black and white etching: Mr. W. Broomhall. Perfume: Mr. J. King, Hiruharama. Christmas cake: Mrs. J. L. Grant. Ham: Mrs. W. H. ' Scott. Child’s smocked frock: Mrs. 11. Beattie. The proceeds of the Christmas fair amounted to over £IOO, which sum is extremely creditable. Those in charge of the stalls and entertainments were: Fancy goods, Mrs. F. Harris and Miss B. Fivers; produce, Mrs. Morrison, Mrs. P. Burton and Mrs. Ryan; cakes, Mrs. J. Corbett and Mrs. J. Ransley ■ sweets, Miss D. Conole and Miss N. Brodie; meat, Mrs. G. Fivers and Mrs. J. Carver; ice-cream and drinks, Miss C. Oates : fishpond, Misses I. Conole and M. Daly; afternoon tea, Mesdames Brodie, Conole, Hollever, and Sparks; sideshows, Messrs. S. Conole, J. Conole, W. Horton, J. L. Andersdn, W. Brechin and J. Porter. FAREWELL PARTIES Mrs. D. Lunisden, Tokomaru Bay, who .s shortly leaving the district to reside in Auckland, is being feted by her friends prior to her departure. Last week Mrs: J. Liddell and Mrs. Findlay were hostesses at a very enjoyable bridge evening at tlie home of Mrs Riddell, Ongaruru, and a pleasant time was spent by ail. The card prize was won by Mrs. J. L. Grant, who was suit ably rewarded, and the guest of honor

was presented with a handsome bridge set from her friends. A delicious homemade supper was served in the drawingroom, winch was decorated with bowls of carnations. Those present included Mesdames J. Riddell, H. Findlay, D. Lumsden, J. L. Grant, C. Burdett, P. Kay, S. Doig, F t E. Porter, F. Harris, Brodie, J. 13. Stafford, Hanlon, R.Walden (Napier), L. Steed and J. Oates. Another card evening in honor of Alt' and Airs. D. Lumsden was held at tho residence of Airs. J. L. Grant. Rautanou, on Saturday. The guests were entertained with bridge until a late hour, when supper was sorved by the hostess. The guests of honor were presented with a small autograph album, suitably inscribed by each person present, who included Mesdames J. L. Gt'mt, F. Harris, Brodie. J! 13. Stafford, 11. W/ Angus, I'. Kay, J. Riddell, S. Doig; Miss L. Fer i-is: Alessrs. D. Lumsden, J. B. Stafford, G. Chalmers, and V. Cullinane. An informal social gathering took place at the bowling pavilion last week, to bid farewell to Air. A. Adams, who has been resident in Tokmaru Bay for many years, and until his ill-health necessitated his retirement from social functions was a prominent bowler of this district. Mr. Adams, accompanied by Mrs. Adams, have left to reside in Hastings, and they will be greatly missed. On behalf of the bowlers, Mr. Adams was presented with a cheque, which carried with it the best of luck from the club. Three hearty cheers and "Auld Langi Syne” concluded a very jovial evening.

\ competition which was recently organised by the Tokomaru Bay Bowling Club was won by Mr. Joe Chino, who received a Christmas hamper as a prize. The committee and staff of the Tokomaru Bay Public School held the annual school picnic in the Mangahauini Valiev last week, and the children spent a happy day in the brilliant sunshine. Buses and 1 cars transported the children and their parents to the sunny spot, and the day passed very quickly with sports and amusements, which were all entered into with great enthusiasm.

Miss Belsy Doig. Tokomaru Bay, visited Oisborne at the week-end. —Mrs. G. Chaffey, Tokomaru Bay, is an inmate of the Waiapu Hospital, where she is recovering from pneumonia.—Misses J. Busby and J. Jefferd, of Pauariki, Tolcomaru Bay, are home from Hawke’s Bay for the school holidays.—Mr. F. Nathan, Tokomaru Bay, is visiting Auckland.— Masters Bobbie Fivers, Dick Conole and Rex Oates, Tokomaru Bay, are home from their respective colleges for the holidays.
