THE LIBRARY
(To the Editor of the Herald.)
Sir,—in its wisdom the" committor x>f the Turanganui Library has placed-on its Index 'Librorum Prohibiioriuri certain including such well-kncrtm gublications' a§ the War-Cry and—the hristian Science Monitor; The. iormer is too well known to need description, while the latter is described byl Quo Usque in the following terms.;. "That'a clean, wholesome, constructivepaper-can be a commercial success has been proved by the Christian Science Monitor}_■* large daily peper which has been-pub-lished in America since; J,908.. .It. |s entirely free from scandal and sensationalism and refuses a" large amount -of advertising which does not come/up toits high standards. "This" "searching censorship of. advertisement copy "only increases the confidence of the* public, and so eager' are the big firms' to buy space that the advertisements increased 347 per cent, in four years." ■ Does it übt seem strange, .sir, that, our local literary censors should bar out such papers? Surely the library subscribers will want to know that, these are good reasons for banning these and other papers that were recently Mused space in the reading room.—■Yousvetc., BIBLIODS.
