OPERATIONS IN AUSTRALIA AMERICAN INTERESTS SYDNEY, Dec. 6. American meat interests are extending their operations to Australia, In view of this the State'Government is remodelling the Government abattoirs, at which the meat supply of Sydney and' the export of meat are handled, intending to make the establishment. one of the best of its kind... Although a great amount of money has been spent on the abattoirs and the selling grounds adjacent, the methods have been a long way behindhand. It is recognised that the business must be modernised in order'that the competition/ may be met, and the handling costs are to be considerably reduced. The establishment has been capitalised at £BOO,OOO and the Government is spending £IOO,OOO more on bringing it up to, date.„..'.., The cost of remodelling .the abattoirs is to come out of the revenues of tho establishment. Tho Government has borrowed from Swifts a man to direct the remodelling work who is stated to bo one of tho greatest engineering arid refrigerating experts in the world. The firm of Swifts is operating extensively in Queensland, having taken over .the moat works at Townsvillo and '.Gladstone. Vcsteys af'c, also operating.in. Queensland' and have recently purchased the works of a'company near Sydney. Armours arc operating in this part of the world, and Wilson and Company are said to bo organising to obtain some of the trade. Altogether at present about. 75 per cent, of the'meat export trade is controlled by'American and British firms, according to Government information. It is intended that ' the Sydney abattoirs (known as Homebush) shall be fitted to stand' up to the competition. " •
