TENNIS SURPRISE

QUIST BEATS PERRY MEETS CRAWFORD IN FINAL V TCTO'RIA N Oil AMP lONS UI PS (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Awn.) MELBOURNE, Doe. U. 'Tlto Victorian championships wore continued to-day. The Kooyong court's were played on for the first time since the floods. Only two courts, however, were used, but they were in remarkably good condition, though tricky, owing to patches of silt. Men’s singdes.—Semi-final: Quisl defeated Perry, o—o, (i—2, C—-0; Crawford defeated Stefani, (>—l, G—l, G—B, G—4.

Women’s singles.—Semi-finals: Miss Ilartigan defeated Mrs Ilopman, G—B, G—-I, 7—5; Miss Pound defeated Mish Denrman, G—l, B—G.8 —G. Women’s doubles. —Miss Round and Mrs Harper defeated Miss Ilartigan and Mrs Ilopman, G—4, 3 —G, G—3.

In the doubles final, Crawford and Hopman versus Quist and Turnbull, the score was G—3, 3—G, 6= —4, ii—7 (unfinished). The contest went on till dark, and the game was even and the result doubtful. Misses Round and Ilartigan meet in the final of the women’s singles tomorrow.

Though Miss Ilartigan seemed to fear Mrs Ilopman she recovered confidence later, forcing the pace and winning, notwithstanding many errors. Miss Round did not have things all her own way against Miss Dearman. Although she won in straight sets she took each with only a minimum margin. Her stroking was not as fluent as in the earlier matches and she lost points with several double faults.

Quist played tennis worthy of a master of the game. He had perfoet contrpl over every stroke, and foreed Pejrry into more errors than lie has made in any match in Australia. The result was the great tennis surprise of the year. Crawford established a lead early and was never greatly troubled by Stefani. Crawford's driving and serving were superb. He will meet Quist in the final to-morrow.
