HAWKE CUP
POVERTY BAY’S BID
MATCH AT NEW YEAR TARANAKI OR MANAWATU Satisfactory information regarding the challenge issued by the Poverty Bay Cricket Association for the Hawke Cup was received to-day by the secretary, Mr. J. M. Kay, from the New. Zealand Cricket Council. The schedule of early matches for tho Hawke Cup lias been drawn up by the council, and Poverty Bay’s challenge is to be disposed of after the Manawat,u association’s representatives have had their chance against Taranaki, the holders of the trophy. The Manawatu-Tara-naki match is set down for the Christmas holidays, and the Poverty Bay representatives will have their chance on New Year’s Day and the two following days. If the trophy should be lifted by Manawatu, that association will be called upon to defend it against Poverty Bay almost (jinmedintely, and the Manawatu cricketers in that, case will have a fairly heavy programme.
It is considered that tho Poverty Bay association is stronger in representative material this season than for several years, and a determined bid to bring the Hawke Cup home will be the major effort, of the summer.
