WAIROA ROADING

PROPOSED STOCK ROUTE ENGINEER’S REPORT (Herald Correspondent.) In addition to reporting fully on the state of the main highways, and the progress of contracts, the county engineer, Mr. A. G. Smith, reported as follows at Wednesday's meeting of the Wairoa County Council:— “Proposed stock route from Ruakituri Valley to Waikaremoana. —In company with the assistant engineer of .the Public Works Department I inspected the proposed route over the old' Hangaroa track from the end of Oldham's road at Waikaremaona to the Ngapakira suspension bridge at the Ruakituri end. The approximate length from Aniwaniwa at the lake to Ngapakira bridge at Ruakituri is 18 miles. About 12 miles of this route is through standing bush, although the trdtsk was formed about 40 years ago. All the .original bridge creek crossings have collapsed and the track in many places’ has slipped away and would havo to be widened for traffic. The Erepeti route branches off the Ruakituri road at Erepeti bridgo and joins the Ohuka road between .-mannon and MahgataWhiti stations and thence to the Waikaremoana road at Oinahanui junction, a distance of approximately 16 miles. This route traverses open grass country and with a bridge t.o erect over the Mangarewarewa Stroam and three miles of formation to bn done would give a vehicular road from Erepeti to the Omahanui Junction. The distance from tho Ohuka road at the Omahanui ,"function to Aniwaniwa at. the junction of the Hangaroa track is approximately 19 miles. The distance .of the. present route from Ruakituri via To Reinga am] Frascrtown to Waikaremoana is approximately 78 miles. Taking, everything into consideration and money being available for the. work, the Erepeti route would suit ali parties and give a shorter vehicle road between Ruakituri and Wnikaremoana, although as a stock route it would be 17 miles longer than tho proposed Ruakituri-Aniwaniwa route. The saving in distance between the Erepeti route and the present route via Frascrtown would be 48 miles approximately. “Onentii road. —I have completed an engineering survey of 1 mile 20 chains for the formation of a 12ft. road from the sea beach below Onenni station to the plateau above on the East Coast Commissioner ’s property at Muhin. The plans and quantifies are at prosent in preparation.
