A Fashion Artist Reviews The Mode
AFTER spending some months' in . Sydney, Michael, a well-known American fashion artist, has returned to his own familiar haunts again.
Writing from Hollywood to .the Sydney Morning Herald, Michael sends some promised fashion 'chat which, because it comes direct from the film colony, where dressing is supposed to be so much in advance of the mode, is interesting and informative. “Cellophane is more popular than over, and is seen in a regular avalanche of fabrics for the fall season, wool, silk, and velvet, even sports jerseys, all are interwoven with the glitter of cellophane. But the' most fascinating of all is its use in lace, giving it. the appearance of cobwebs with the dew on them. VThere is a * new- material called anthracite which is black and shiny as coal, but sleek and soft to the touch and with a, highly polished cellophane finish. Satins and taffetas are very popular, and are made much of for the coming season. Dark colors.are used for day wear, with white accessories for the warmer weather, and without, them for the cooler.
“Color combinations aro interesting. Two shades of tho same color arc very much in evidence, with occasionally just a touch of contrasting color, as for instance —two shades of brown with a slight touch of light green, or two shades of blue, navy, and powder with the merest touch of cherry red in a tiny nock bow or a couple of bracelets.
“Too much cannot be said about the new ‘oversize beret.’ This shape is very popular and is seen in all manner of guises. “Hair-ribbons (of all things) are growing in favor. Long hair is tied slightly on one side with a ribbon, and short hair is tied on top like ‘Alice in Wonderland. ’
“A new cape or jacket is of white or black crepe, with printed flowers cut out and nppliqued on. It is very Japanese in effect. “Skirt, lengths are about the same, but they show a new split or sometimes a double split up the back as far as the knee. This makes for freedom of movement, and where there is a double split, gives the appearance of a detached panel down the back.
