NOXIOUS WEEDS

CONTROL BY COUNTIES OBJECTION TO ACT (Pur Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Objection to a recent amendment of the Noxious Weeds Act permitting counties throughout New’ Zealand to take over the eradication of noxious weeds in their respective districts was voiced at a meeting of the Makara County Council. When tjie department’s letter was read, Cr. Windleys said the council would have to consider the matter carefully. It would be placed in a very queer position if it did not take the responsibility, because it was not going to take part in the reduction of noxious weeds, lie did not think that it was a fair amendment of the Act. The Department of Agriculture had neglected its duties for the past 30 years, and an attempt to hand over the infernal mess at this stage was going too far, and lie was not prepared to accept the responsibility. He realised that if the council refused responsibility, the department would say that nothing was being dono by the county to eliminate noxious weeds. He was not in favor of taking action.

The chairman, Mr. Bdthamley: I don’t think anybody here is, but wo are not compelled to administer the Act. It was decided to draw the attention of the Counties’ Association to the matter.
