(Herald Correspondent.) On Tuesday evening the Matawai Dramatic Circle met at Mrs. A. E. Gibson’s residence, and after practising carol singing, continued its series oi play-readings. A happy evening was spent, culminating in a dainty supper. Mrs. G. Caul ton Hus ieit Matawai with her small sou to visit Gisborne. —Miss Mclntyre is the guest of her sister, Mrs. H. E. Burgess.—Sister Pritchard returned from Waiuui Beach, Gisborne, last Sunday. Through her interest, two children from this district, Keu Fleming, of Matawai, and lan Clayton-Greene, of Koranga School, leave on December 19 for the health camp at Olaki. —Mr. F. H. Forge took the Methodist service in Matawai last Sunday, lie was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. C. Edwards, the former singing several delightful solos during the service. There was a fair congregation present. The December meeting of the Matawai Women’s Institute was held in the Public Hall on Thursday afternoon, Mrs. W. Thomas presiding. There was a fair attendance of members and one visitor, and Hie meeting opened .with the singing of the institute song. The competition, best Christmas gift costing not more than Is, was won by Mrs. Fielder with a hopsack purse worked in a llorai design in art wool embroidery. Mrs. Fielder gave a very interesting demonstration, and explained carefully what to do and what not to do in this pretty art work. A hearty vote of thanks, proposed by Mrs, Burgess, was tendered the demonstrator. The roll-call, “Where I first met my husband,’’ was answered by members. The interval for afternoon tea. for which Mesdames R. Montgomery, G. R. Robb and F. Pert were hostesses, was followed by the singing of carols by the dramatic circle. The carols chosen were “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “Silent Night,” and “The First Noel.” The remainder of the social half-hour was occupied by a play-reading, the play, “Touchstone,’’ being chosen. This pleasant meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
