OBITUARY

MR. G. F. HENDERSON WELL KNOWN RESIDENT The death of Mr. George Frederick Henderson to-day removes a resident who was well known to Gisborne people, particularly to the older generation who remember his association with sporting and business activities many years ago. .Deceased! was horn at. 10 Carlton Square,- Parish of Deptford, England, in 1851. Educated at the City of London School, lie was engaged as a, clerk in the Bank of England for three years, and then took up teaching. Tie became a junior master, and later embarked on private tutoring. In the- latter capacity he was tutor to the grandchildren of the late Sir .Dighy Cayley, Little Brompton. The late Mr. Henderson came lo Now Zealand in 1876. arriving at .Auckland by the steamship Merwanjee Franjee, which was under the command of Captain Bidwell. In Gisborne, he entered the employ of the late Mr. .1. T. E. Bogan, solicitor, and was later with the late Mr. W. L. Bees. Deceased was court crier in the Supreme Court for 36 years, and was later with the late Mr.' H. E, Hill, registrar of births, deaths and marriages at that time. Ho engaged actively in sport, and was a member of the Gisborne Bowing Club in 1878, and up to the time of his death lie. had the honor of being the oldest living member of the club. Mr. Henderson Was also a member ot the'Poverty Bay Rugby Union, and was captain of the first. Poverty Bay representative Rugby team which visited Napier. Politically, he was a strong supporter of the late Sir James Carroll, with whom ho was associated for many years, assisting in that member’s campaign work. * . .

The late Mr. Henderson was married in Gisborne to Miss Mary Agnes Stapleton, daughter of 'the late • Captain Stapleton, and his wife predeceased him. The only daughter is Mrs. R. Richardson, Gisborne, with whom the late Mr. Henderson had been living for many years. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and seven, great-grand-children. Tile interment will take place at the Maka'raku cemetery to-morrow afternoon, and the: funeral will leave Cochrane's private chapel at 2 o’clock.

MR. C. H. WILLIAMS Mr. Charles Henry Williams, formerly public works engineer at Wanganui, died at. his residence, Day’s Bay, Wellington, on Tuesday. Mr. Williams was m his seventy-first year, and since Ins retirement live years ago had lived at Wellington. Mr. Williams was responsible for much pioneer Government survey and . construction work throughout New Zealand, being first stationed at Invercargill in the ’.nineties, and later at Picton, Taumarunui. To. Kuiti, Hamilton, Dunedin, and lastly at Wanganui. He was born at Shrewsbury, England, being the eldest son of Dean Williams, who came with Bishop Neville to the colony, m the early days, and formerly of Naseby and Gisborne.

Mr. Williams is survived by bis widow and son and daughter, Mr. Cecil Williams, of Hamilton, and Mrs. P. V. Norman, of Day’s Bay.
