SPORTS AT THE DOMAIN

PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES LARGE CROWD ATTENDS H. PREDDY’S RECORD. Tho second floodlight sports meeting hold by the Poverty Bay Professional Athletic and Cycling Club on the Victoria Domain last night drew another large attendance. Threatening weather prevailed throughout the evening, but fortunately the rain held off until after the gathering had dispersed." Keen competition was seen in the various events, and a feature was the-large number of rlosc finishes witnessed in the different races. The proceedings wore followed with great interest by the spectators, and suitable music was rendered by the W.E.C.M.R. Regimental (City) Band under ' the baton of Lieut. A. Wood.

The officials, who worked hard for ,the success of the meeting, were:— Starter, Mr. C. L. Davy;'handicappers, cycling, Mr. S. ,T. Sutton, running, Mr. C.. Daw; marksmen, Messrs. W. Watts, G. Graham, and W. McDonald; judges; .Messrs. C. Robinsom C.. Me* Donald and R. Sharpies; timekeeper', Mr. H. Miller;. wrestling referee, Mr. T. Smale; megaphone steward, Mr. A. Baker. ’ The most outstanding performance ol the evening was that of H. Freddy, who succeeded in bettering, his past efforts by.covering oiiclap in 34 f l-ssjec. His best time previously was 37sec. Several of the competitors succeeded in registering double'■-wills," whilst in the ladies’ section meritorious performances included those of Misses M. : and RJohnson and G. Gooch. A mishap occurred during the six-lap senior cycle handicap, but’ fortunately without serious consequences. Negotiating the northern turn, N. Davy slipped and came down. Millier, the scratch rider, who at that stage was steadily improving his position, collided with Davy’s machine and somersaulted heav-ly. SPECTACULAR WRESTLING T\vo wrestling bouts preyed popular items and were watched with considerable interest. The club is to be congratulated on the provision made for these events. An excellent ring has licen provided and special floodlighting enables tho contest to be seen from any part of the field- Two spectacular bouts were staged and some good 'wrestling was seen.* The first match was between W. Cooper, list. 31b., and T. Stevens, list. 6ib. The first two rounds were of a lively nature, whilst in the third Stevens succeeded in gaining the, only fall by jumping his opponent and finishing off with a body ’press. At the conclusion' of the Coiitest the referee announced' that Cooper agreed’ to a return bout at the next meeting, subject to the Wrestling Association's approval. In the second exhibition P. Awatere was announced to meet A. Reid, list. 41b., but owing to the former’s absence C. Buscke, lOst. 81b., took his place. The bout had only been iir progress a sjiort time when Buscke sec.uired a fall with a' back loop slalrrt.
