RONGOMITAPUI MEETING

(Herald Correspondent.) The •monthly meeting of the Rongomnitapui Women’s Institute (Te Araroa) was held in the Hinenipe meeting house on December 8. There was, owing to the Wharekahika Christmas tree function, only a moderate attendance. Mesdamcs Walford, Ryan, and T. Hovell, visitors, were welcomed. "After ithe reciting of the creed, Miss C. Ilovell, the secretary, spoke to the mothers present on the danger attending the children’s going _to bathe in the Awatere River after school, without some responsible person accompanying them. 'She also stressed the importance of parents sending their children, from three years of age upwards, to the Matakaoa dental clinic. _ , The president, Mrs C. H. Hughes, put to the meeting the suggestion whether the meetings of the institute should, in future, be held in the hail. The suggestion was unanimously adopted. She also asked members to make bedspreads or tablecloths for tne Poverty Bay federation’s competition to be hold in March. , The subject for the nest meeting s roll-call was decided, the best programme card for the period from February to June, 1035. It was also decided not to bold the January meeting and to conduct the next meeting on February 9, the competitions for .which would be: The prettiest summer hat, the most useful apron, the, best Madeira cake, and the best coconut icing. The competitions for the present month were: Something made out of Iyd of cretonne, the prettiest biscuit till, and the best, Christmas cake. Mesdamcs Walford, Ryan and T. Hovell judged the exhibits, and had difficulty in dividing the honors, so beautiful was the handwork. Finally, first place was given to Mrs. D. Brooking for her beaten and varnished tin decorated with paua shell, Mrs. C. 11. Hughes taking second plaoe for her hand-painted tin. and Mrs. D. Brooking the third place for another tin. decorated with paua shell. For the best article from lyd of cretonne Mrs. D. Brooking again took first prize for her beautifully made sewing-bag, while Mrs. 11. Rangiliuna and Miss Ruwhui respectively secured second and third places, the former for a. summer bat and the latter for a child’s suit.

In the cooking competition Mrs. Sexton took first place, Mrs. Ahuriri second, and Mrs. Ttna Brist’owe took first place for icing. Christmas parcels were exchanged amongst members. The president gave Mrs. Birin Polio, the oldest member in the institute, a handsome taura wliitau. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Henderson, Waitoa and llenare, who served a delicious afternoon tea. The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close an enjoyable afternoon.
