In London, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, 50 per 1000 of tho populace died annually; now the figure was 12 per 1000. Whereas a baby born in 1838 might be expected to reach the age of 44 years, the expectation was how 60 years. The United States to-day spent £12,000,000; on health services, but. £21,50\),000 on beauty preparations. Probably ihe British expenditure was similar, yet sickness cost Britain £300,000,000-.
