FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP

MILES OF ANGLERS ROCKET STARTS COMPETJ TTON LONDON. Sept. 23.

A rocket shot into the air at Abingdon yesterday, and when they heard it 648 anglers along the peaceful Thamesside cast their fishing lines into the river and began the greatest fishing fight ot the year.

Altogether £4 teams, each containing 12 picked men, were battling for the AllEngland Angling Team Championship as well us for the individual championship, which goes to the. man who captured most fish during the day. Many ol the competitors had come by conch and charabanc, some travelling til! through the night, from Birmingham, Brad lord, Bristol, Leeds. Leicester, Liverpool. Manchester, Mansfield. Sheffield. Shropshire, and many other centres.

Tire Lincoln team broke down on the road, and some of the members made a dash by private ear to the riverside, arriving only a short time after the start.

NO FISH KILLED Not a single fish was killed. As they were brought to hank they were, put into a “keep net” until the weighing, and then, at the end of the day. were thrown, back into the river. The contest was conducted strictly in accordance with Thames fishery by-laws, which provide that all fish under standard size wei’e at once returned to the river.

After a drenching day on which there, was vain from beginning to end, soaking all the competitors through, the results were announced as follows - The All-England Angling Team Championship— 1, (Sheffield Amalgamated Anglers’ Society ( 141 h. 7>oz. 11 drams): 2, G. and W. Angling Association, Manchester (101 b. Goz. 13 drams); 3. Grimsby and District Amalgamated Society of Anglers (101 b. Ooz. 13 drams). Individual Championship and Medal for Angler Catching Most.
