MODERN CARGO SHIP HANDSOME NEW VESSEL VISITOR TO GISBORNE Continuing her maiden voyage from London, the Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.litany ’.•> new motor liner Waiwera arrived to-day from Bluff. The Waiwera is the first of three motor ships ordered by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company for the London-New Zealand trade. She was launched from the north yard of Messrs. Harkind and Wolff, Belfast, on May 1. and is the first cruiser-stern, ship built to the order of the company. The Waiwera left London on September 14 and her average speed-from London- docks to Port Chalmers was 15.65 knots. The. actual time the ship was moving was 34 days 12 hours. Captain J. H. Gaskell; R.D., R.N.R., who is in charge of the ship, has commanded several of the company’s new vessels. The chief engineer, Mr. L. F. P. Sorgo, was last in the motor ship Taranaki: Accommodation is provided for 12 passengers, the state-rooms being fitted in passenger-liner standards of luxury. The propelling machinery of 'the Waive ra consists of two 10-cylinder fourcycle single-acting crosshead type airless injection Diesel engines of the HarlandB. and W. type. The pistons are cooled with oil, whilst'the cylinder" covers and jackets are fresh-water cooled, Air’: foi pressure .charging is supplied by turboblowers, the discharge being, direct' to the inlet manifold. The refrigerating plant, consists ot three horizontal enclosed high-speed twin compressor refrigerating machines of a type which is" being used on all the large meat vessels at present‘under construction in Great Britain.

The total capacity inside insulation is over 558,000 cubic feet. Special arrangements have been made in certain of the spaces for the carriage of chilled meat in lieu of frozen, a trade which is being developed rapidly between Groat Britain and New Zealand and Australia. SHELTER DECK TYPE The new motor ship is of 10,760 tons gross register with a slightly raking stem and a cruiser stern. She’is of the shelter deck type, with three tiers of ’tween decks, a forecastle and long bridge superstructure, and a small house aft, above which is the docking bridge. 'The profile is completed by two slightly raked pole masts, a squat stream-lined “motor-ship” funnel, and four sets of derrick posts. The vessel has six holds,of which Nos. 1 to 5 inclusive are insulated; and each hatch is . adequately served bv steel tubular derricks, those on the tore and main masts- being capable of dealing with IQ-ton . loads, and the remainder with seven-ton. Each derrick has ,its own electric, winch.... Oil the foremast there is also, a, special derrick for heavy lifts up to 40 tons. The Waiwera was built -to Lloyd’s 100A.1 class' with freeboard. She Was designed to the usual Board of - Trade .-equipments, and has the following dimensions: Length (between perpendiculars). 515 ft.; length (over all), 535 ft. 6in.; beam (moulded),/ '.7oft.; depth (moulded), 43ft.. 44in. to upper deck. . The hull is divided by eight watertight bulkheads. ‘ The rudder is of semibalanced streamlined type, with electric hydraulic • steering gear. The double bottom is divided into tanks for fresh water, water ballast, and oil fuel. Taqks for oil fuel ensure for the ship a very large radius of operation jvithoUt;, rebunkering.
