OBITUARY
MR. ROBERT JOHNSTONE AN CROFT AM A SETTLER Veterans of the South African \lu” especially will hoar with deep regret of the death of Mr. Robert Whitson Johnstone, of Opoutnma, who passed away suddenly yesterday at the Wairoa llosjiital. The late Mr. Johnstone, who was 05 years of age, had been ailing progressively for some time, hut there had boon no outward eause for alarm on the jKirt of his relatives and friends. lie had entered hospital on Saturday, believed to he suffering from a mild complaint. hut lie collapsed yesterday morning and died almost immediately.
‘The deceased was a well-known storekeeper and settlor at Opoutama, and was almost as well known in Gisborne ns in,the Wairoa County, through his previous residence in this district and family connections here. lie was born at Auckland, and was the second son of the late Mr. George Johnstone, who resided in Auckland for a great number of years, having come out from (he Old Country in 1859. As a young man, Mr Robert Johnstone was athletically inclined, and had an excellent physique. When the Boer War broke out, lie was in the prime of life, and with two of his brothers saw service on (he veldt with the New Zealand contingents, all three being fortunate enough to return to New Zealand without permanent illeffects from their service. In later years lie had lived rather a retired life, that kept touch with his old com-rades’-and gave many a “lift” to veterans who were in worse cireunislamjes Ilian himself. The late Mr Johnstone is survived by his wife, and by three daughters and' Iwo sons. Other members of his immediate connection are three sisters, Mcsdumes J. Tombleson, A. A. Todd, ami 'Gordon Witty, of' Poverty Bay, ami ■four brothers, Messrs. G. J. A. .John'stone, and Graham Johnstone ot Gisborne, Mr James CL Johnstone, of Auckland, and Mr Gordon C. Johnstone, of Te Puke. To the relatives of the deceased, deep sympathy will be extended in their bereavement.
A military funeral will be accorded the late Mr. Johnstone by members of the South African Veterans’ Association, the funeral taking place to-mor-row afternoon at Opoutama.
