ATHLETICS

AMATEUR MEETINGLAST NIGHT’S RESULTS Despite the threatening weather Inst evening, there was a good attehdancc at the Childers road resOrbe when the Gisborne Amateur Athletic arid Harrier Club held its second floodlight sports meeting of the season. The events were followed with keen interest, and close finishes were witiicssed in many of the races. A shower of rain interrupted the proceedings for a short time, but was not sufficient to prevent the balance of the programme being carried through. The events were run off in good time, and the officials, who were practically identical with those of last week, worked hard for the success of the meeting. The chib intends to continue these gatherings each week, and, given favorable weather, they should prove very popular. The announcing system, which has been installed again this season, is the result of the enterprise of .Mr. Stan. Poole. This year ATr. Poole lifts constructed the system on a more permanent footing and its undoubted success has resulted in its becoming one. of tiie necessary pieces of the club’s equipment. The twb loud-speak-ers on the grandstand arc supplied, frbin a six-valve amplifier and the result of a race may b’o heard all over the grounds. A loud-speaker has been placed in the dressing-room also, making it possible to notify competitors quickly of a race or an event that is about to be staged. A musical programme also may be broadcast to entertain patrons prior to the commencement of the sports. mAli'. Poole hopes to complete.a sourtd-proof box at the end of the grandstand, in which to install the microphone, and this will add greatly to the efficient -working of the system. Two wrestling bouts, foUght at catch ewights, "were aghin Staged la ; st night, and were keenly followed by the crowd. The first contest, between Flhvell and Wade, proved' quite lively, both wrestlers showing good form. The bout resulted in a win for Flavell, who gained a fall in the second round. However, interest was chiefly centred in the second mutch, a return, bbut between Bead and Cobper. Followers of the spOrt were expecting fo sec soflie sp'e’cfachlar 'Wrestling, but a heavy shower of rain brought the contest to a conclusion at the finish of the second round and the referee, Air. T. Smile, awarded n di J aw. RESULTS IN DETAIL. 100yds. Primary Schoolboys’ Handicap . (It) starters).—White.. 1; Pinching, 2; Fredericks, 3. Tints, 9 4-ssec. ICOyds.
