FIND OF GOLD
■ ’i - '/ * PROSPECTOR’S LUCK j . RICH REEF INDICATED Cold in a quantity which indicates a very rich reef has been found on the West Coast, by a miner, Mr. v\. A. Newcombo. Disclosing Ins discovery, Mr. Newcombo produced some quartz reef samples and all were liberally stmlded with gold. Whon he found the reel Mr. Acucombe was prospectmg for alluvial deposits near Ahaura. He wanted to a climb some difficult ‘Country and had to make a foothold with an axe. lie knocked a piece of stone away and, purely by chance, located the outcrop. The Alexander mine reef, .winch is be-nig operated so successfully, was discoveied iu a similar way. , Mr. Newcombe has prospected the area and has found that the reef widens from 6ft. to 27ft. It runs for a mile and then dips out of sight at an angle Of 45 degrees. Its' direction is northeast, south-west, practically direct north, and then south. The Teef, which is the first workable one found in the district, is thought to be on the same line as the reefs in the Inangahua goldfields. It is bordered by slate, granite, and sandstone formation, - ‘ i and the wholo of the area is on solid ground, with a hanging wall of granite all the way. In the samples that were taken to Greymouth there were quantities of antimony and iron pyrites. The presence of these minerals is said to bo one of the best signs in an outcrop. The reef is not far from the Ahaura township, which is 23 miles from Greymouth towards Reefton, and the surrounding ground has nover been prospected for quartz reefs. Mr. Newcombe says it is the richest quartz he has ever seen, and others who a have examined the samples believe that the discovery is an important one, as they estimate that the quartz will return six ounces to the ton. Mr. Newcombe is a single man and an Australian. He came to New Zealand about nine vears ago, and lias worked at alluvial prospecting at Murchison, Wangateka (Nelson) and Buffer,
